Neighbourhood Watch first started in New York in the 1960s. This was in response to the murder of Kitty Genovese. The community then decided they needed to look out and report crime more proactively. Their aim was to assist law enforcement and help make their local area a safer place to live.
The idea was brought to the UK in 1982 following the return of two police officers from the USA to the small Cheshire village of Mollington.
Following the great success of NHW in the UK, Neighbourhood Watch in Spain was started in 1999 in Torrevieja.
NHW is run by volunteers who dedicate many hours of their time to help make our community safer. Various meetings and events are organised to keep local residents well informed.
Neighbourhood Watch in Spain has continued to grow and has seen many new branches being set up across the Costa Blanca. Current membership is approximately 60,000 residents.
